Music & P.E.
We offer all students, Kindergarten through 6th grade, weekly Art, Music, and Physical Education classes and extracurriculars.
Art
Art instruction is an essential component of a well-rounded education. Art is taught to enhance learning with the development of creative problem solving, critical thinking, and individual expression skills. Students have fun emphasizing holidays and seasons with art projects and, where appropriate, art is incorporated into other areas of study. The BFCS art program highlights the multi-sensory development of basic art concepts such as color, perspective, and balance, and all instruction is provided by a qualified art instructor. Students enjoy dedicated art instruction for a 45-60 minute period once per week depending on grade level.
Music
Our elementary music program is based around active music making. All of our general music teachers are trained in the Kodaly pedagogy which emphasizes music literacy. All students have music twice a week for thirty minutes, and in a typical class, they can expect to sing, play games, and use instruments. Kindergarten music begins with a focus on broad musical concepts like fast vs. slow, loud vs. soft, and progresses through the years so that by 6th grade, students can read music notation using solfege (do, re, mi) and count advanced rhythms. We also have band and orchestra programs that meet before and after school every day.
Physical Education
The purpose of Physical Education is to provide students the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to make positive decisions about a healthy, physically active lifestyle. This is achieved through movement regardless of innate and learned abilities, culture, or gender. A student’s growth and development is guided through quality participation in the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains of learning. Benjamin Franklin Charter School teaches physical education using the Pangrazzi Method. This program concentrates on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and character building.
